Joy Crookes Single Review: ‘Perfect Crime’
Joy Crookes practices self-love and positive affirmations on a new feel-good single
Ahead of her hotly anticipated sophomore album, Juniper, Joy Crookes has just dropped Perfect Crime, an uplifting but honest tune about the experience of plunging back into the dating scene.
The song has also been compiled into an EP featuring other singles from the upcoming album. The EP includes collaborations with Kano on Mathematics, a wistful tune about romantic misalignment, and Vince Staples on Pass the Salt, a fiery clapback at those who try to tear her down.
Joy changes gears once more with Perfect Crime, where she channels the energy of the pep talks exchanged in club bathrooms or your girls hyping you up before a first date. “I'm gon' mix love into sex and suffer no side effects. I pour myself into you, still keep a glass of me too”, she sings. Throughout the track, Joy asserts her needs and self-worth through lyrics that read like positive affirmations.
While the track serves as a confidence boost in musical form, it also doesn’t shy away from Joy’s fears about putting her heart on the line. Ultimately, however, she recognises she’s ready to give things another go. “I wanna tear into another love. I wanna dare myself to crash into us”.
Joy’s vocals are pitch-perfect as she delivers her self-assured manifestations over top of a groovy bass line. The track has a fun and laid-back vibe, sure to put listeners in a good mood.
If Perfect Crime is any indication of what’s to come from Joy’s next album, listeners are truly in for a treat.
